Setting up a print queue

You can create print queues for printers connected over either TCP/IP or AppleTalk. Users select an AppleTalk queue in the Chooser, and a TCP/IP queue using the Desktop Printer Utility (which comes with Mac OS 8.1 or later).

Print jobs are stored in a queue until the print server sends them to an attached printer. You can create up to 10 print queues to serve multiple workgroups, offer additional print choices, or improve printing performance. You can attach up to 30 printers to a queue.

If you attach more than one printer to a queue, print jobs in the queue are sent to the first printer available.
A print queue can be set up to use AppleTalk, TCP/IP, or both protocols.

Guidelines for creating a print queue

Every PostScript™ printer comes with a PostScript printer description (PPD) file that describes the features and capabilities of the printer. When you attach the first printer to an AppleTalk queue, the print server assigns that printer's PPD file to the queue. (TCP/IP print queues do not use the PPD file.) Any features not described in the first printer's PPD may not be available for use by its queue, so follow these guidelines when creating queues:
Create separate queues for printers that have different capabilities. For example, assign color printers to one queue and black-and-white printers to another.
If you want to attach AppleTalk and TCP/IP printers to the same queue, assign AppleTalk printers before assigning TCP/IP printers.

Creating a print queue

    To create a print queue:
1 Open the Apple menu and choose AppleShare IP Admin, then choose Print Admin.
2 Start the print server if it is not running.
3 In the Print Server Activity window, click the New Queue button.
4 Click each tab (General, Attached Printers, and Security) and make the settings you want.
You must attach at least one printer.
    5 Click Save.
